Having come from an abstinence-based counseling background, I admit that I was skeptical about methadone maintenance treatment at first. Then I began to see the true difference that methadone made in the lives of patients who had lost hope, whose health had deteriorated, and who had spent every cent that they had to support opiate habits that had gotten out of control. These patients had lost their jobs and their families as addiction claimed them. Once enrolled in treatment, within the space of a month (and in many cases, less time) they were able to jump off of the rollercoaster of addiction and no longer considered opiates to be the centerpiece of their lives. They were able to find jobs, mend fences with their loved ones, pay their bills on time, save some money, and abandon old habits that were wrecking their lives. The difference between these patients at intake and the same patients with just a short amount of treatment time was astounding!
